Science-backed reasons why we "self-sabotage"

Uncategorized Oct 22, 2026

Between the books, the podcasts, the Instagram dietitians, the Reels, the macro calculators, and that one really detailed PDF you downloaded at 11pm three years ago, you've absorbed a lot about health.

We're not in an information shortage anymore. Haven't been for a long time.

What we actually have a shortage of is implementation (how to actually change long-term) under real-life conditions.

The gap between: "I know this" and

"I'm doing this consistently, in the middle of a stressful Tuesday, when I'm tired, when my kid is sick, when I'm traveling, when I'm three days from my period and everything feels harder"

...that's where the years go.

That's where the DIY trial-and-error stretches into a decade.

That's where smart, capable women lose months at a time to plateaus they can't decode, hormone shifts they can't translate, and small inconsistencies that quietly compound into "nothing's working."

And biologically, this makes sense.

We know that sustainable transformation is not just an intellectual process.

It's neurological.

That's because of confirmation bias: your brain is constantly gathering evidence to confirm the beliefs you already hold about yourself.

If somewhere underneath the surface you believe:

"I always fall off."
"I can't stay consistent."
"My body fights me."
"Nothing works for me."
"I gain weight easily."
"I always self-sabotage."

...your brain unconsciously filters your experiences through that lens, even if objectively you are progressing overall.

One missed workout becomes proof.
One pound fluctuation on the scale sets you back.
One emotional eating night becomes evidence.
One plateau reinforces the identity.

And because the brain loves familiarity and prediction, it actually rewards belief confirmation with dopamine, even when the belief itself is harmful.

Which means just trying to change your habits is not enough for lasting transformation... we also must change our identity our nervous system has rehearsed for years.

This is also where self-efficacy comes in: your belief in your ability to succeed.

Research in neuroscience and behavioral psychology consistently shows that self-efficacy directly impacts whether someone takes action, persists through challenges, and continues after setbacks.

In other words:

Those who create long-term transformation aren't necessarily the ones with the most information... they're the ones with the most support to help them change their brain and behavior on a subconscious level.

They're the ones who slowly build evidence of:

"I am someone who follows through."
"I can trust myself."
"My body responds when I support it consistently."
"I don't have to spiral every time things aren't perfect."

That shift changes everything.

Because belief changes behavior.
Behavior changes outcomes.
And outcomes reinforce belief.

This is why coaching matters.

Not because you need more information.

Because you need someone helping you interpret your data in real time.

Someone who can say with compassion:
"This is feedback, not failure."

Someone who can help co-regulate the nervous system response before the old identity fully reclaims the narrative.

Someone who helps you stay in the game long enough for your brain and body to finally believe: this is safe, this is possible, and this can actually last.

Here's what live coaching actually compresses:

The guesswork.

Someone watching your specific biofeedback every week and saying: "this is what's happening, here's the adjustment."

The momentum.

When everyone in the cohort is reporting in, taking action, and showing up, your nervous system entrains to that energy. Consistency becomes normalized. Healthy behaviors become less emotionally expensive.

The plateau decoding.

When the progress slows and you feel like spiraling, a coach reads the data, identifies the lever, and you adjust, without losing two weeks to confusion.

The accountability.

Not the punitive kind. The "someone is genuinely paying attention to you" kind, which for most high-functioning women is rarer than they realize.

At some point, the bottleneck stops being information... and starts becoming proximity.

We've watched thousands of people make more progress in twelve weeks of Awaken Your Nutrition than they did in the previous five years of trying on their own.

Not just because they got the right, bio-individual information but because they finally had someone walking alongside them while they applied what they already knew, plus the missing pieces they didn't.

If you've been collecting nutrition information for years and the results haven't matched the effort, the gap probably isn't your intelligence.

It's implementation.

And implementation changes faster in proximity.

Plus, your brain already has enough to micro-manage in this day and age.

We support you through the hardest parts of change because we've lived through them ourselves.

And spoiler alert: the work of supporting your body never really ends.

Your hormones change.
Your stress changes.
Your schedule changes.
Your seasons of life change.
Your body changes.

Which is exactly why we teach principles and skills you can apply for life, not stagnant information that keeps you dependent on our coaching forever.

Our goal was never to create perfect "clients".

Our goal is to help you become someone who knows how to support yourself for the long haul.

The June cohort of Awaken Your Nutrition is now open for early bird enrollment ($500 off) until May 31st.

P.S. The biggest difference between solo and supported isn't motivation. It's that when you're solo, every plateau feels personal. When you're coached, every plateau is simply feedback with a next step.
