Shiny Object Syndrome and the Dopamine Trap

Uncategorized Oct 21, 2026

There’s a moment in every real transformation where things get uncomfortable.

Not always because the method doesn’t work.
Not always because you picked the wrong program.
But sometimes because the mirror turns toward you.

Here’s the hard truth most people don’t want to sit with:

If you stick to one process,
and the process doesn’t change,
but the results aren’t there yet…
You become the only variable.

And taking ownership of your results, instead of blaming something vague or external, is confronting.

So instead of staying, many people try to run away.
They pivot.
They try something new.
They convince themselves that the method must be wrong, that their problems are unique, and they need another solution.

Because changing the method feels better than changing yourself.

And there’s a biological reason for this:
New plans, new workouts, new nutrition strategies,
they all deliver a hit of dopamine.
Dopamine loves novelty.
It loves the feeling of “this might be the thing.”

Consistency, on the other hand,
does not create instant dopamine.
It creates delayed reward.

We see this all the time:

Someone commits to strength training.
Or simply balanced eating.
They start showing up consistently.
Their body begins adapting.
They refuse to recognize improvements in
mood, energy, strength and how clothes fit.

And their brain looks for evidence of why it's not working, why they haven't dropped weight fast enough, and thus, not worth the effort.

Because that's what untrained brains do: they like predictability. They naturally resist change to "keep you safe" unless you've done the work to embrace growth.

So in a few months in, the novelty wears off.
The dopamine drops.
Boredom creeps in.
And they bounce.

They jump to a new program.
A new style.
A new coach.
A new diet.
A new “better” plan.

What they don’t realize is the cost of that decision:

Every time you abandon a process before it has time to compound, you reset adaptation.

With training, that means strength, muscle, confidence, and efficiency take longer to build.
With nutrition, it means your blood sugar never fully experiences regulation.
With habits, it means your brain learns that discomfort equals escape, and novelty equals relief.

Now, an important nuance here:
Sometimes the process truly is flawed.

We’ve worked with many women who came to us after being told that eating high-carb and high-fat simultaneously would “heal their metabolism.”

They stayed in pro-metabolic.
They trusted the process.
And they gained 20, 30, sometimes 40 pounds.

That wasn’t a lack of discipline or a mindset problem.
That was physiology.

A method that ignores metabolic science, total daily energy expenditure, and bio-individual food requirements will fail, no matter how committed someone is.

So this is not about blindly staying loyal to something that’s scientifically unsound.

What we’re talking about here is something different.

It’s staying long enough inside a sound, evidence-based, adaptable framework to let your body respond, and then adjusting based on real biofeedback, not promises or trends.

Because the hardest part of real change, whether it’s workouts, nutrition, or lifestyle is being patient enough to let the work compound.

We are so conditioned to fast results.

Fast weight loss.
Fast feedback.
Fast validation.

But the female body does not work best that way.

It works best with slow, consistent, regulated change, the kind that doesn’t spike dopamine, but builds stability instead.

And when results don’t happen as fast as someone is used to, that’s usually when the story starts:

“I stopped because I'm tired of putting in effort.”
“I stopped because it wasn’t working fast enough.”
“I stopped because life got busy.”

But underneath almost every pause is the same thing:

A desire for relief from growth, from learning something new, and from the discomfort of dopamine settling instead of spiking.

Because if you keep going, something harder has to be confronted:

When you commit to something (scientifically sound) long enough, you confront yourself.

Not, “This isn’t working.”
But, “I’m not staying consistent with the basics.”
Or, “I don’t like how slow this feels.”
Or, “This requires patience instead of stimulation.”

And that moment is uncomfortable.

This is why Awaken Your Nutrition is built the way it is:
Yes, we teach nutrition science.
Yes, we teach metabolism, exercise science, strength training, and physiology.

But a massive part of what we do is breakthrough coaching.

Habit change coaching.
Mindset coaching.
Emotional processing coaching.
Nervous system coaching.

Because change is not easy for most brains, especially dopamine-driven ones.

I’ve watched so many clients want to quit in weeks 1, 2, or 3.

They ask for refunds (which we don't give, and we're upfront about) when they realize they actually have to put in EFFORT to see results...

Instead of just buying their solution as they would with buying a product like a supplement that promises to cure everything.

Not because the program wasn’t working.
But because it wasn’t working as fast as they were used to.

But if they stay, something incredible happens.

For some, it's in week 4.

For others, it's around weeks 6, 8, or even 10, when the breakthrough comes.

They realize the consistency is why they’re seeing results.

They realize their nervous system feels calmer.
They realize they don’t need the constant dopamine hit anymore.
They realize staying was the work.

This is why we say all the time:

There is no one single repeatable program or plan in Awaken Your Nutrition that we give to all clients.

The framework, process, and baseline nutrition science education is the same.
But every path and every plan for each client is bio-individual.

That's why you get assigned a direct coach in both levels of support in our 12-week program, checking on you every single week, plus Shannon and Lisa on group calls, and an entire community of women cheering you on.

And our job is not to force you into a rigid template.
Our job is to help you find what works for your body, and then teach you how to read your biofeedback so you can adjust intelligently.

That’s why we don’t give up on clients. We tell them it's not if, but when they want to give up. It's expected. And we expect to coach you through it all.

We help you interpret what your body is telling you.
We help you stay consistent when your brain wants novelty.
We help you confront patterns without shame.

Because the truth is this:

Our process works.
Our science-backed foundations work.
The only reason it doesn’t work is if you quit.
And quitting almost always feels better in the short term, because dopamine loves escape.

Because we are by your side supporting you until you find what does work for your body.
And success, after 12 weeks, isn't always significant weight loss.

Sometimes it's simply understanding nutrition science, understanding your body cannot be rushed, and slowly implementing what you've learned on your own time, at your own pace, through curious experimentation.

Either way, you have the tools, knowledge, and skills to adjust for life. We teach you what every single certified coach on our team is required to learn before they even applying to our advanced 24-week nutrition coaching mentorship.

And if you ever need more support after 12 weeks as you build new, consistent habits, we have plenty of options available at every budget level.
