What the "burn" really means during a workout

Uncategorized Oct 16, 2026

While Shannon has been soaking up the Pura Vida in Costa Rica, she’s been taking all kinds of movement classes: yoga, Pilates, fusion workouts, and everything in between.

And it sparked a reminder we want to pass along to our entire community:

Just because a workout leaves you drenched in sweat and barely crawling home doesn’t mean it’s building strength.

Yes, intensity has a place.

But without proper priming, mobility, and intentional programming, all that “burn” can leave your body more inflamed, stressed out, and puffy.

Not lean, strong, and resilient.

Let’s break it down.

🔬 Not all muscle fatigue is created equal.

When your glutes cramp mid-set or your muscles “give out” halfway through a class, it’s not necessarily a sign of effectiveness. It’s often a signal that:

  • Your muscles weren’t properly activated (warm-up and nervous system priming are key),

  • You’re overtraining a specific contraction pattern, or

  • You’re relying too heavily on high-rep ranges that target only type 1 muscle fibers.

👉 Type 1 fibers support endurance.

👉Type 2 fibers build power, shape, and strength.

High-rep, high-burn classes like CorePower Yoga, Pilates Fusion, or Barry’s Bootcamp primarily engage type 1 fibers.

These are great for muscular endurance and stability, but they aren’t enough if your goal is to build real strength, sculpt your body, or support long-term metabolic health.

Without recovery and variability, this style of training can also:

  • Spike cortisol,

  • Slow muscle recovery, and

  • Leave your body looking and feeling inflamed or puffy.

💡 Sarcoplasmic vs. Myofibrillar hypertrophy

That burn you feel from endless pulses and reps? That is often sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. It creates fluid expansion within the muscle cells and gives you a temporary “pump.” But it doesn’t build sustainable strength or muscle tissue.

Myofibrillar hypertrophy builds the muscle fibers themselves. This happens with lower reps, heavier loads, and intentional progression.

That is exactly what we do in our progressive strength sessions.

This is why full range of motion, smart rep ranges, and a nervous-system-friendly approach matter.

✅ Inside the All Access Pass, we help you:

  • Prime your nervous system and joints before strength work

  • Engage both type 1 and type 2 muscle fibers in every session

  • Improve mobility alongside strength

  • Avoid overstimulation and fatigue

  • Build a resilient body that can adapt and recover

You deserve a workout that supports your whole system, not just your sweat glands.
