One of my new 1:1 clients is heading to Disneyland next week and asked me for tips on how to eat there without derailing her goals.
I smiled because I know that feeling so well. For years I dreaded social dinners, vacations, and anything involving food outside the house.
I would either restrict all day and then blow it at dinner, or I’d tell myself it was a “cheat” day and end up feeling sluggish, bloated, and stuck.
It wasn’t until I really understood nutrition science that things clicked for me. A few months of tracking my food gave me awareness I’d never had before.
Suddenly, I could look at any plate in front of me and estimate how it would impact my energy, my blood sugar, and even my hormones. That short-term learning gave me the long-term food freedom I had always been chasing.
It's also what helped me maintain my health and body composition in one of the most extreme environments when I lived in a camper van for 8 months and dined out daily as our mini fridge could only hold so much food.
When you cook at home and understand nutrition science, you know what’s going into your food. When you dine out, you are almost always getting hidden fat and carbs.
A grilled chicken salad looks healthy but often has high fat (and thus, high calorie) toppings like cheese, nuts, avocado, bacon, and a dressing with at least 14 grams of fat.
That same salad may also come with bread, croutons, or a sweet vinaigrette that adds more carbs than you think.
At 9 calories per gram, fat adds up quickly, while carbs on top spike blood sugar and insulin.
In nature, fat and carbs rarely occur together in large amounts. Yet at restaurants they almost always come as a package deal. And that combo is exactly what leaves us tired, puffy, and wondering why we feel off.
Instead of obsessing over calories, I started asking myself: where is the protein on this plate, where are the fibrous veggies, and do I really need this carb right now, or is it just habit?
Protein and fiber are what keep us full and satisfied, yet they are the hardest to find when dining out. If you make them the foundation of every meal, you are already winning.
Carbs aren’t the enemy. They just need a partner. Eat them alongside protein and veggies, not on their own.
And fats are almost always present in cooking, so you rarely need to add a whole lot extra.
This is how I would eat at Disneyland and come home feeling good in my body instead of weighed down:

As a 43-year-old woman with a history of prediabetes, I strategically eat lower in carbs when dining out for a deeper reason that may not be applicable to you.
Estrogen declines in perimenopause and beyond, which can increase insulin resistance. My body doesn’t process carbs the same way it did in my 20s.
That’s why I choose a lower carb, protein-forward approach when dining out. For me, it keeps my energy stable, my metabolism supported, and my hormones happier.
But here’s the thing: not everyone needs the same strategy.
For example, if you are an ectomorph in your 20s with no hormonal imbalance and looking to put on muscle mass to support your strength training, your carb tolerance will be completely different and eating low carb will likely be detrimental to your goals.
