Mark, some people who have never worked with a coach before expect it to be all rainbows and butterflies. 

But that's not always true. 

You shouldn't hire a coach who will simply agree with you all the time.

Even for those with a growth mindset, regulated nervous system and adaptable personality, working with a coach can be triggering.

Why? Because whether your goal is making a million dollars, buying a house, losing 10 pounds, or finishing school, you will encounter challenges along the way.

You may doubt yourself.

You may doubt the process.

You might take stock too soon and expect monumental results without putting in enough time and reps.

You could try to take short cuts or change all the things too fast without realizing the sequential steps necessary to create a long-lasting transformation.

You might create new stories to keep you stuck right where you are.

You might resist changing because it's scary and unknown.

You could find yourself wasting time going own an endless rabbit hole of conflicting information instead of doing what is required to be done.

You may compare yourself to others who have achieved this goal and want to give up because it's not happening fast enough. 

You may wonder if it's "just you" (hint: it's not).

With all the resistance that arises when we attempt something we haven't done before, it's helpful to have a knowledgeable mentor to guide you along the way. 

But here's the thing... 

An effective coach will not join you in arguing for your own limitations. They will not add to a pity party of excuses.

This doesn't mean that they are emotionless robots or that your experience and challenges are invalid.

An affective coach: 

• Holds space
• Is empathetic without contributing to inaction or self-devaluation
• Helps you take control of runaway thoughts and beliefs that aren't serving you anymore
• Demonstrates by example how to be consistent, disciplined and emotionally regulated
• Helps you discern between true intuition and the stories our ego tells us to keep us "safe"
• Holds a steady vision of the version of you that has everything you want to be, do and have

An effective coach also can...

• Trigger you
• Challenge you
• Contribute to feelings of discomfort
• Make you question everything

This is part of the process and to be expected. 

Because...

Regardless of your goal, you will likely want to "give up" at some point. 

What you'll learn during any process of achieving a goal is: 

How you respond during times of challenge.

What is your tendency when you encounter resistance?

Some people put their heads in the sand, check out, and don't want to address what's coming up. 

Some people try to flee and ghost the situation entirely.

Some people get angry and want to place blame on anything and everything outside of themselves.

Some people have an "F-it" mentality and allow themselves to implode in the opposite direction of what is required to achieve their goal.

Some people stay curious and brave enough to observe the resistance objectively and be open to support on how to move through the obstacles.

In the context of nutrition coaching: how one reacts when they're not getting results fast enough in terms of health and fitness translates into other areas of life. 

Because how we do one thing is how we do everything.

An effective coach will help you identify your blind spots and challenge (not commiserate with) you to overcome.

And while a coach is not your friend first and foremost, oftentimes an incredibly strong bond develops out of mutual respect and commitment to growth.
