Do you N.E.A.T?

If you've been following us for some time, you may have heard us talk about N.E.A.T., or non-exercise activity thermogenesis.

Why are we bringing this up now?

N.E.A.T. is essentially all the movement that you perform in a day outside of your dedicated exercise routine. 

This includes activities like gardening, walking up and down your stairs, cooking, cleaning, bending over to pick things up, walking from your car to the store, playing with your kids, walking your dog, etc.

And, N.E.A.T. is one of the first things to wane as we head into the cold season.

It's not surprising to know that for most modern humans working desk jobs, N.E.A.T. is already on the lower side anyway since we've outsourced so many basic human needs that originally required a hefty amount of movement (and thus, calorie burn). 

But even if you're intentionally active and walk / move often, it's likely that your N.E.A.T decreases as the seasons change and colder weather ensues.

One of the best things you can do for your metabolism (and mental health) is to keep moving, even in the Fall!

All the little activities add up... take the stairs whenever you can, use a step counter to track your daily steps (work up to 10,000+ steps a day), walk to the store, etc.

You may even find yourself looking at chores differently, knowing that all that vacuuming, sweeping and wiping down of surfaces all contributes to your daily N.E.A.T total, which naturally increases the overall amount of calories you burn in a day.

In fact, if you are intentionally moving your body throughout the day as much as possible, you'll burn more calories through N.E.A.T. than your actual workout!

And low impact N.E.A.T. specifically targets fat loss instead of using up your glycogen stores because your heart rate will be lower than it is during intense exercise. 

This is a win-win all around!
