My Dr. said Keto but I chose a CGM and changed my life

Uncategorized Oct 15, 2026

When I turned 40, something shifted.

As a certified nutrition coach and co-founder of The Green Door Life, I was already eating balanced macronutrients, strength training consistently, and doing everything “right”. But my body wasn’t responding the way it used to.

I felt more reactive. More anxious. More tired and hungry after meals instead of energized and satisfied.

My cravings were intense—like a rip current that I couldn’t outswim.

My periods were heavier than ever and my mood swings were extreme.

And that increased puffiness, inflammation, and weight gain? They didn’t budge, regardless of my perfectly balanced meals and mineral rich hydration levels.

I thought that this was it: I had reached the inevitable state of perimenopause that I had been preparing for (and hoping to delay) since my 30's. And that I would just have to manage these dreaded symptoms for 10-20 years.

After wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for the first time ever and confirming with labs, I got a wake-up call I wasn't expecting: I wasn't in perimenopause, I developed prediabetes.

So, my doctor told me to try Keto.

But deep down, I knew that cutting out all carbs (and even cutting way back on protein) wasn’t the answer.

I had done Keto before several times in the past. I remember being light-headed during strength training sessions, the dreaded keto flu, and the uncontrollable carb binges after restricting hard core for a month.

And when your body’s primary stress response is already activated (hello, parenting, careers, and surviving modern life), slashing carbohydrates can actually send your nervous system into survival mode.

👉 High cortisol = even more fat storage, mood swings, and burnout.

So, instead of going Keto again, I got curious. And relentless in my typical 5/1 Generator Human Design fashion.

I started learning more about hormones, became certified by IIN, and discovered what happens to our metabolic health over time.

Turns out, it's incredibly common to develop insulin resistance as we age.

➡️ As estrogen declines in our late 30's and beyond, insulin sensitivity drops, too.

That means the same meal that worked for you five years ago might spike your blood sugar excessively now.

Even with the same sleep habits. The same stress management. And the same workouts.

And left unchecked, that can develop into pre-diabetes (like it did for me and one of our coaches, Melanie, and other clients), which is the pre-cursor to Type 2 Diabetes.

The great news? It's reversible, especially if you catch it early.

It’s not that your body is broken—it’s that it’s changing. And our nutrition, movement, and nervous system support have to change with it.

Wearing a CGM and tracking patterns helped me understand that:

  • Blood sugar stability isn’t just about food. It’s impacted by stress, sleep, hormones, hydration, light exposure, timing, and movement.

  • CGMs can show early signs of metabolic dysfunction—often years before a diagnosis.

  • And most importantly? Blood sugar is the most modifiable marker of long-term health.

For the first time, I saw what was happening inside me.

I noticed how certain meals spiked my glucose—no matter how “healthy” they looked.

I tracked how poor sleep increased my fasting glucose levels and insulin sensitivity the next day.

I realized that daily runs and maxing out on weights five days a week skyrocketed my blood sugar.

I quickly had to switch to exclusively doing Green Door Life strength workouts, which were much more gentle on my nervous system while sculpting my muscles in a way that I had always wanted.

I saw how walking over 10,000 steps a day helped regulate my blood sugar better than supplements ever had.

This was my data.

My story.

My body speaking a language I could understand on a deeper level than ever before.

And that language is different for every single person.
